A big, rowdy historical western about the building of the first transcontinental railroad--the basic 'revenge' plot between the hero and the evil villain is a little 'dimestorish' but this is the western that put John Ford on the movie map as a major director, and it's a zinger. Filming in the California Sierras and Nevada, using authentic 1860's locomotives and rolling stock, Ford puts you right in the middle of the excitement of a major landmark in the history of the West. The construction sequences and the sheer movement of the film more than make up for whatever lapses in plot occur during the almost three hours of the movie. The restoration is marvelous, and an added bonus is the fact that you can actually watch TWO versions--the original 1924 American release, and the 1926 International print, which is about 17 minutes shorter. Either version's worth watching--and remember, this is the film that INVENTED what later became cliches in the Western film genre. Terrific film, and the newly composed score for the movie just rolls right along with the images.
I like it. REALLY like it!
