Dedicated to Tomoyuki Tanaka (1910-1997), who produced the 1954 original and sequels, the Devlin/Emmerich interpretation displays a redesign of Godzilla, now a large lizard mutated after fallout from French nuclear tests. A blinding flash of white light fills the Eastern sky. Thousands of miles away, the Pacific Ocean churns, engulfing a freighter. On another part of the globe, giant footsteps plow a path through miles of Panamanian forests, Tahitian villages, and Jamaican beaches. In the Ukraine, biologist Dr. Niko Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick), with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is examining the impact of radiation on Chernobyl earthworms. Colonel Hicks (Kevin Dunn) and a military team escort Niko to check out giant claw marks on the beached freighter; theyre joined by paleontologists Elsie Chapman (Vicki Lewis) and Mendel Craven (Malcolm Danare). Blood and giant-size footprints indicate some sort of enormous reptile. French secret agent Philippe Roache talks to the freighters only survivor, who keeps repeating, Gojira...Gojira. Tatopoulos et al arrive in Manhattans Fulton Fish Market where Godzilla surfaces, moving on to the NYC financial district where Mayor Ebert (Michael Lerner) is speaking. Ambitious Audrey Timmonds (Maria Pitillo), who works for TV news anchor Charles Caiman (Harry Shearer), is Nikos former girlfriend, and she uses this to her professional advantage. As the wave of destruction continues, Niko and Roache track the creature through the evacuated city and discover Godzillas eggs about to hatch in Madison Square Garden. They are followed by Audrey and TV cameraman Victor Animal Palotti (Hank Azaria), and soon the hatching Godzilla offspring prowl the Garden corridors, leading to a final showdown. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

As a life long film fan, a monster movie is destinguished as a film with a nonhuman creature in the lead, usually the title character.Sometimes it's the size of a human, like the Creature from the Black Lagoon,or Frankenstine. And then there are the titans The most famouse of these is Godzilla. This American version was to be the new Classic. The add campagn was a hoot. But the film was a general let down.
This was the biggest version of Big G. ever seen. Most expensive too.But even for a monster movie this monster was unbelievable. It was far too huge to run so fast. The helicopters pilots the worst shots in the universe. The design of the face, with it's chin jutting forward just made for a square, ugly, almost faceless thing.Which is a tragedy because the rest of the the body design is great!Suposedly it was created by atomic radiation saturating a tropical island full of lizards.A reptilian, dinosaurian face would have done a lot to make this Godzilla a member of the cast. There was no excuse for it.Half the best dino-artists in Hollywood turned in perfect designs.
Mathew Brodric was the one actor who seemed to fall into the spiret of the whole thing. Most of the time he was just called "The Worm Guy".This just made him that much more of a nerd, and,of course, the only guy who knows whats going on.He's fun. And that is the key to the whole movie. Put it on the big screen, bigger the better.Unwind for about 90 minuts. Watch it with the kids. No bad language. No blood. Some silly sub plots so you can watch amazingly tallented actors waste their tallents propping up the subplots.
Don't get me wrong. I liked this movie because of the shear spectacle of it.All of the ship wrecks and foot prints and other build up devices were perfect. All of the effects were flawless. This film is not about anything but a spectacular good time.
Too bad the monster didn't have a decent face. The cartoon series wasn't bad either.
Remember, I have a big screen TV, and I love monster movies.
