These are marvelous piano pieces that unfortunately are generally unknown to a wider audience (and even to good pianists - ask them !). Most people know "Liebestraum n.3" and "Sonetto 104" but very little have heard the equally good "Am Rhein, im schonen Strome", "Comment, disaint-ils" or even "Die Lorelei". And the recordings of these pieces are very little. Only two other I know: from Naxos (but not complete in one CD) and from Hyperion with Leslie Howard. The recording of Hyperion is more complete because has the both the 1st and 2nd version of "Lorelei" and the 3 Liebestraums. But so far. The piano there sounds very plain and lacks a bit stereo image and scenic presence, so I cannot enjoy full. In this recording the piano sounds very well and is the instrument that Liszt himself used to play these pieces ! Also, I think the pianist here plays more expressive than in Howard's recording. The drawbacks is that here there aren't the Leibestraums and 1st version of "Lorelei". Also, because these are in fact vocal songs it would be good idea to include the text from the poems, so the pieces could be better understanded. These are the reasons I don't give 5 stars. If you love Liszt and/or lyric pieces and don't know these songs buy this CD !
And something for the future: I would like to hear and other recordings of Liszt song trancriptions like this.
