The Avenging FistThe work of two of Hong Kong's top action directors, Andrew Lau and Corey Yuen, The Avenging Fist is a science-fiction-fueled action epic set in a futuristic city where violence and weapons are outlawed. Out of this time comes a weapon known as the Power Glove, which activates hidden powers in the human brain that enable those who wear the glove to have super powers. When a former special agent known as War 21 shows up with a Power Glove planning to use it for evil, it's up to Nova ( Wang Lee-Hom) to stop him. The Avenging Fist also stars martial arts film legends Sammo Hung, Stephen Fung, and Yuen Biao. ~ Jason Gibner, All Movie Guide

The Avenging Fist Opening up with a shot of a futuristic cityscape filled with flying cars and high-tech billboards reminiscent of both Blade Runner and The Fifth Element, The Avenging Fist proves that originality is not one of its strongest points. Originally created as a film version of the popular video game Tekken, The Avenging Fist marches past its lack of new ideas by wearing its video-game and sci-fi influences proudly on its shiny leather sleeve. Though the plot is barely comprehensible, the mind-warping, gravity-bending fight scenes and expert special effects shine bright enough to illuminate the entire film. The film features fight scenes that drip with raw, crazed energy and jaw-dropping effects. As in his past films, like The Storm Riders and A Man Called Hero, director Andrew Lau shows his talent for mixing and matching elements of action, fantasy, and sci-fi. There is not one action scene in The Avenging Fist that isn't filled with enough speed-ups, slow-downs, and freeze-frames to wow even the most hardcore fan of the Matrix films. Never is there a fight that doesn't involve either a character zooming into the sky or blue force fields exploding all over the screen. As the movie approaches its overly confusing climax and begins to echo moments we've already seen in films such as Dark City and the Star Wars movies, The Avenging Fist comes close to roaring off its already unstable tracks. Still, as the credits roll, it's clear that the final product is a visually stunning, super-powered electric thrill ride that fans of the genre cannot afford to miss. ~ Jason Gibner, All Movie Guide
