I Love Lucy: Season 01
Part of Series:
I Love Lucy [TV Series]
Arguably the most popular TV situation comedy in the known world (and possibly a few worlds beyond that!), I Love Lucy has never stopped playing in rerun form since it originally aired over CBS from October 15, 1951, through June 24, 1957. It can be said without much fear of contradiction that everyone -- yes, everyone -- loves Lucy...and Ricky? and Fred? and Ethel. The first sitcom to be filmed with three cameras before a live audience, I Love Lucy starred real-life husband and wife Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, who throughout most of the series lived in a modest New York apartment house managed by their best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz. Cuban-born Ricky was the bandleader at the Tropicana Club; redheaded Lucy was a housewife who yearned to break into show business -- or, failing that, to become fabulously wealthy through some hairbrained get-rich-quick scheme or other, usually hatched in collaboration with her partner in crime, Ethel -- much to the dismay of the easily excitable Ricky and the eternally crotchety Fred. To call Lucy "zany" would be putting it mildly; there seemed to be no end to the ridiculous situations she could get herself into, nor any limit on the wild plans she cooked up on her own or with Ethel. But no matter how crazy things got, Ricky and Lucy invariably ended up in each other's arms, Ricky declaring his undying love and (at least temporary) forgiveness. During its first season on the air, I Love Lucy was the nation's third highest-rated program. Thereafter, it was ranked number one or very close to it. When during the series' second season Lucy Ricardo had a baby (to coincide with Lucille Ball's genuine pregnancy), the episode on which the blessed event occurred enjoyed the largest viewership of any single program up to that time -- and, since both Lucy Ricardo and Lucille Ball gave birth on the very same day (January 19, 1953), the news was of such magnitude that it pushed President Eisenhower's first inauguration off the front pages! To keep the series fresh from season to season, I Love Lucy's extraordinarily talented team of writers would every so often alter the format, never more spectacularly than in season four, when the Ricardos and the Mertzes headed to Hollywood so Ricky could star in a movie musical version of Don Juan. In keeping with its tinseltown ambience, the episodes emanating from this premise positively glittered with such celebrity guest stars as Richard Widmark, William Holden, Cornel Wilde, and most memorably, Harpo Marx. The "Lucy in Hollywood" format spilled over into the next season, yielding an unforgettable two-episode story arc involving John Wayne. Season Five also saw the four principals heading to Europe, accompanying Ricky's band on tour. The most significant changes occurred during the sixth and final season. Ricky had quit his job at the Tropicana to open his own night spot, the Club Babalulu, and the increase in the Ricardos' bank account enabled the couple and their son Little Ricky (played from the fall of 1956 onward by Richard Keith) to move to an expensive ranch house in suburban Connecticut. Naturally, the Mertzes moved next door, while on the other side of the Ricardo estate there lived another couple, Ralph and Betty Ramsey (played by Mary Jane Croft and Frank Nelson, who also essayed several other supporting roles on the series). Although the half-hour version of I Love Lucy ceased production at the end of the 1956-1957 season, the four stars (and "Little Ricky") went on to appear in 13 hour-long "Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" specials, filmed between 1957 and 1960. And while Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz divorced in 1960, their production company Desilu remained a prolific TV-series factory for the next decade, turning out such hits as The Untouchables, Mission: Impossible, and Star Trek. On her own, Lucille Ball continued playing the "Lucy" character in two more series, The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy, which though very successful on their own never quite captured the unique chemistry and charm of I Love Lucy. ~ All Movie Guide

Includes Seasons:
I Love Lucy: Season 01
By the time the first 35 episodes of I Love Lucy had been shown on CBS' Monday night lineup, virtually everybody in America loved zany redhead Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball), her Cuban bandleader husband Ricky (Desi Arnaz) and their landlords and best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance, William Frawley). The series admirably set up most of the standard situations that would endear it to the viewing public within its first two months on the air. In the debut episode "The Girls Want to Go to a Nightclub," Lucy pulls off her first "disguise scene" to fool Ricky; in "Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her" (the first episode filmed, but not the first one shown), our heroine takes a minor misunderstanding to hitherto unscaled farcical heights; and in "The Diet," Lucy makes the first of innumerable attempts to break into show business. Other memorable first-season episodes include: "The Audition," which was actually a remake of the original 1950 I Love Lucy pilot, treating fans to the actual nightclub act in which Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz appeared prior to their TV debut; "The Séance" would be memorable but for the classic line "Ethel to Tillie...Ethel to Tillie..."; "Lucy Fakes Illlness" is highlighted by Lucy's dead-on imitation of Tallulah Bankhead; and "Pioneer Women" features the outrageous "fast-rising bread" gag. Best of all, not to mention one of the most famous individual half-hour episodes in TV history, is "Lucy Does a TV Commercial," in which an increasingly besotted Lucy tries to extol the praises of that miracle concoction "Vitameatavegamin." ~ All Movie Guide

Includes Episodes:
I Love Lucy: The Moustache
Having grown a moustache for a TV role, Ricky (Desi Arnaz) seems disinclined to shave off his new lip adornment. Hoping to get Ricky to remove the moustache, Lucy (Lucille Ball) decides to prove how silly he looks by donning a false beard. Alas, the beard has been fastened to Lucy's jowls with "Bulldog Cement" rather than spirit gum -- and nothing she can do will remove the whiskers. Making matters even worse, Ricky is bringing home a talent scout in hopes of landing another TV part. Anxious to make a good impression on the scout, Lucy hatches a scheme to "logically" hide that pesky beard -- and guess what happens next! ~ All Movie Guide
I Love Lucy: The Ballet
In this classic episode, Lucy (Lucille Ball) once again goes to extreme lengths to appear in Ricky's nightclub act. Apprised that Ricky (Desi Arnaz) is looking for a ballerina and a burlesque comic, Lucy first takes ballet lessons from the imperious Mme. LaMond (Mary Wickes) -- and ends up with her foot stuck in the practicing bar. Next, Lucy persuades a baggy-pants comedian (Frank J. Scannell) to teach her the vintage burlesque chestnut "Slowly I Turned," replete with custard pies and seltzer water. Inevitably, Lucy shows up in the middle of Ricky's act at the Trocadero -- little realizing that this is the evening that the ballerina, and not the comic, is supposed to appear. Desi Arnaz sings "Martha." ~ All Movie Guide
I Love Lucy: Lucy Does a TV Commercial
One of the funniest I Love Lucy half-hours ever filmed, this is the episode in which stagestruck Lucy (Lucille Ball) becomes a commercial spokeswoman on a major live TV program emceed by Ricky (Desi Arnaz). Lucy is hired to promote a liquid medicinal tonic called Vitameatavegamin, requiring her to not only extoll the product's praises but also sample a tablespoonful on-camera. Unfortunately, the ad copy for Vitameatavegamin is so long-winded and complicated that Lucy must rehearse her pitch over and over again, and drink sample after sample of the product. Even more unfortunately (and more hilariously), Vitameatavegamin contains 23-percent alcohol. ~ All Movie Guide
I Love Lucy: Pioneer Women
Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Ethel (Vivian Vance) demand that Ricky (Desi Arnaz) and Fred (William Frawley) buy them electric dishwashers. The boys refuse, insisting that the girls have it too "soft" as it is. Before long, the husbands place a 50-dollar bet that they can live longer without modern appliances than their wives. As a result, the Ricardos and the Mertzes adopt the lifestyles of their grandparents in the "Gay Nineties" -- with unexpected consequences. This episode marks one of the few times that I Love Lucy indulges in an "impossible" gag, involving a loaf of bread that rises to a length of 18 feet! ~ All Movie Guide
I Love Lucy: The Kleptomaniac
Ricky (Desi Arnaz) finds an unusually large amount of money in Lucy's purse, and also stumbles upon a closetful of silverware and other unfamiliar-looking valuables. Not knowing that Lucy (Lucille Ball) is merely collecting items for a charity bazaar, Ricky jumps to the conclusion that his wife is a kleptomaniac. A psychiatrist, Dr. Tom Robinson (Joseph Kearns) is brought in by Ricky to hypnotize Lucy in order to "cure" her of her ailment -- but Lucy, aware of what Ricky is up to, decides to teach her husband a lesson...and what a lesson. ~ All Movie Guide
I Love Lucy: The Freezer
Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Ethel (Vivian Vance) think they've gotten a real bargain when they purchase a freezer for only 50 dollars. Alas, the ladies then decide to buy "two sides of beef" from Johnson's Meat Company, little realizing that they've ordered 700 pounds of meat for a total cost of 483 dollars! Realizing that their husbands will go ballistic when they find out about this transaction, Lucy and Ethel desperately try to sell the beef to unwitting bystanders. Somehow this situation culminates in Lucy being trapped inside the freezer, emerging as a redheaded "popsicle." ~ All Movie Guide
I Love Lucy: The Fur Coat
Ricky (Desi Arnaz) brings home a 3,250-dollar mink coat that he has rented for his nightclub act. Jumping to conclusions as usual, Lucy (Lucille Ball) assumes that Ricky has purchased the coat for her anniversary present. In desperation, Ricky inveigles Fred (William Frawley) into posing as a thief so that the coat can be "stolen" and safely returned to its rightful owner. The plan goes awry when a real thief (played by veteran movie heavy Ben Welden) shows up unexpectedly -- and that's only the beginning of the story! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
I Love Lucy: The Adagio
Determined to appear in Ricky's nightclub act, Lucy (Lucille Ball) hires handsome Frenchman Jean Valjean Raymand (Shepard Menken) to teach her the Apache dance. Unfortunately, Raymand is the flirtatious type, and he begins making harmless but ardent advances upon Lucy. This farcical situation culminates in a duel to the death between Ricky (Desi Arnaz) and Raymand -- or at least that's what Lucy (Lucille Ball) is led to believe. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
I Love Lucy: The Benefit
Lucy (Lucille Ball) will not allow Ricky (Desi Arnaz) to perform at a benefit for Ethel's women's club unless she is allowed to perform as well. Ethel (Vivian Vance) and Fred (William Frawley) conspire with Ricky to work up a song-and-comedy act which will include Lucy, but will prohibit her from telling jokes or singing. Unfortunately for the the conspirators, Lucy tumbles to their plans, ultimately (and hilariously) sabotaging the act with her own inimitable ad-libs -- not to mention a chorus of "Under the Bamboo Tree." An abbreviated version of this episode was adapted as a touring stage act for the I Love Lucy cast, and was also featured in an all-star televised tribute to the United Nations in 1953. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
I Love Lucy: The Amateur Hour
In order to raise enough money to purchase a new dress, Lucy (Lucille Ball) goes into the babysitting business. Alas, her first charges are a pair of precocious twins (David Stollery, Sammy Ogg), who not only throw Lucy into a state of confusion, but very nearly burn her at the stake (with an apple in her mouth!). Things turn out for the best when Lucy and the twins perform a prize-winning act at the Blue Bird Club Amateur Contest. ~ All Movie Guide
