13 GhostsThis haunted house chiller is the second feature from Dark Castle Entertainment, the mid-budget outfit put together in 1999 to remake the cheesy horror genre pictures of William Castle by his daughter, Terry Castle, and producers Gilbert Adler, Robert Zemeckis, and Joel Silver. Financially ravaged and widowed by a fire that is consuming him with guilt, Arthur Kriticos (Tony Shalhoub) is left to raise two kids on his own: beautiful teenager Kathy (Shannon Elizabeth) and grade school student Bobby (Alec Roberts). Good news suddenly drops into their lives when a lawyer visits and reveals that they have inherited a lavish home from a late uncle, Cyrus (F. Murray Abraham), an eccentric ghost hunter. The Kriticos family moves into the remote house only to discover its odd secret: the dwelling contains a state-of-the-art, elaborate system of moving glass walls that trap spirits inside. Soon the ghosts, which can only be seen through the use of special high-tech spectacles, are loose in the elaborate contraption and are none too thrilled about their predicament. With the exits sealed, the family members try to learn the secret of Uncle Cyrus' bizarre mansion and survive supernatural assaults with the help of sassy housekeeper Maggie (Rah Digga), neurotic psychic Rafkin (Matthew Lillard), and Kalina ( Embeth Davidtz), an activist championing the civil rights of ghosts. The eyeglasses through which the spirits can be viewed in Thirteen Ghosts (2001) were part of a ballyhoo gimmick involving pairs of spectacles handed out to audiences for screenings of the 1960 original, which was presented in "Illusion-O." ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide Queen of the DamnedThe second and third novels in author Anne Rice's popular book series The Vampire Chronicles provide the inspiration for this horror sequel starring ill-fated actress and recording artist Aaliyah, who was killed in an airplane crash before the film's release. Stuart Townsend is the vampire Lestat, who has awakened from a century-long slumber and turned his considerable energy to
ock music. His vampirism identity mistaken for a gothic hard rock publicity stunt along the lines of Kiss or Marilyn Manson, he quickly becomes a pop music sensation. Lestat's powerful music reaches the ear of the slumbering Akasha (Aaliyah), the millennia-old "queen of the vampires" who was the first immortal bloodsucker. Akasha is soon free and embarking on a quest to seize control of the world with Lestat at her side. In the meantime, Lestat becomes an object of fascination for Jesse Reeves (Marguerite Moreau), member of a secret order studying the supernatural called the Talamasca, and a band of ancient vampires come together in an effort to stop Akasha, even though her destruction could potentially cause their own deaths. Queen of the Damned co-stars Lena Olin and Vincent Perez. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

 13 Ghosts (not reviewed)
Queen of the Damned Although Interview With the Vampire is one of Anne Rice's most compelling novels and Queen of the Damned one of her most scattershot, this film adaptation of the latter still manages to be more entertaining by a factor of ten than Neil Jordan's hit version of the earlier book. That's because director/co-writer Michael Rymer, free from the demands of famous marquee names, manages to inject the material with a bit of self-conscious wit instead of translating Rice's mannered prose into dreary hand-wringing. With the late Aaliyah vamping and camping it up as ancient vampire queen Akasha and Stuart Townsend nailing Lestat de Lioncourt's mocking eyes and feline grace (if not his hair color), the film offers a surfeit of supernatural glamour. It helps that the script is an amalgam of Queen of the Damned and The Vampire Lestat, the much better book that preceded it in the series. Large and intriguing chunks of both novels had to be cut or compressed, but what remains is a fairly gripping yarn with just a few key characters, including Marius, an ancient Roman vampire played with sensual intensity by Vincent Perez. Unfortunately, Marguerite Moreau proves to be the cast's weakest link in the pivotal part of the film's lone human protagonist. In a succession of gothic costumes cheesy enough to rival the wardrobe of Alyson Hannigan's resident Wiccan on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Moreau drains several scenes of their pulpy vigor. But Townsend, Aaliyah, and Perez light up the screen, thanks, in part, to the striking set design, costumes, and special effects. Korn's Jonathan Davis may not have been every Rice fan's first choice to provide the music for the film's vampire-turned-
ock-star setup, but the five songs he contributed are a lot more appropriate than the Guns N' Roses track that graced Interview. As for the climactic supernatural showdown, it may not be faithful to the source material, but it's a lot of fun. Aaliyah's tragic death may have lent the film's plot a morbid irony, but her charismatic performance helps make Queen of the Damned a guilty pleasure. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
