M*A*S*H: Season 11 Part of Series: M*A*S*H [TV Series] Remembered both for being a show that lasted nearly four times as long as the war it was about as well as one of the few cases in which a critically acclaimed film was successfully adapted into a critically acclaimed television series, the military comedy drama M*A*S*H ran for 11 seasons, ending with one of the most watched events in the history of the medium. Featuring an ensemble cast that included Alan Alda, Loretta Swit, Harry Morgan, and Jamie Farr and based on the Robert Altman film of the same name, the show followed the often hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking day-to-day lives of a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital staff during the Korean War. At the end of its run, after winning a slew of Emmy awards along with adulation from both critics and viewers, M*A*S*H concluded with "Goodbye, Farewell & Amen," a two-and-a-half hour series finale that became the single most watched episode of any television series ever. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide
Includes Seasons: M*A*S*H: Season 11 As the 11th season of M*A*S*H* got under way in the fall of 1982, everyone involved with the series knew it would be their last (the program had already lasted eight years longer than the actual Korean War!) Looking back, the cast and crew could take pride in the series' many accomplishments, not least of which was its making palatable and entertaining a number of hot-button issues that had previously been verboten on American network television. The series had also come a long way from its zany, iconoclastic, hit-or-miss "anything for a laugh" origins, maturing into a thoroughly credible blend of comedy, drama and tragedy (its credibility enhanced by the decision to complete eliminate a canned laughtrack), with fully rounded, three-dimensional characterizations. The fact that the series had managed to win eleven Emmy awards further served to enhance the participants' sense of achievement. Viewers were honestly saddened that their favorite series, which had long since transcended the boundaries of standard sitcomery to become a national institution, would cease production at the end of season 11. Perhaps because the faithful fans were determined to savor every final moment of the series' existence, M*A*S*H was propelled from the ninth most popular TV program of 1981-82 to number three in 1982-83, with the now-legendary 2 1/2 hour finale, "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen," being seen by the largest audience ever to watch a single TV episode. Although this landmark episode would bring M*A*S*H to a poignant close, it was not quite the end of the story. Debuting September 26, 1983, the CBS sitcom AfterMASH detailed the further adventure of several M*A*S*H regulars, all hired by a Missouri VA hospital upon the Korean cease-fire. Carryovers from the original M*A*S*H included Harry Morgan as Sherman Potter, Jamie Farr as Max Klinger, William Christopher as Father Mulcahy, and a character that had been introduced in the penultimate M*A*S*H episode "As Time Goes By," Klinger's Korean-born wife Soon-Lee, played by Rosalind Chao. Suffering the ignominous fate of most such spinoffs, AfterMASH failed to live up to the standards of its distinguished predecessor, and was cancelled after only a season and a half on the air. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Includes Episodes: M*A*S*H: Goodbye, Farewell & Amen Goodbye, Farewell and Amen was the instant-classic final installment of the long-running TV series M*A*S*H. After nearly three bloody years of combat in Korea (and 11 years' worth of TV time!), a truce has been declared and the 4077th is going home. News of the cease-fire affects different people different ways. The happiest of the bunch should be Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda), but he is undergoing a mysterious bout of depression over a horrible incident in his past. Meanwhile, the insufferable Major Winchester (David Ogden Stiers) shows signs of mellowing as he trains a group of musically-inclined Korean prisoners in the niceties of European chamber music. Others who must begin seriously considering a future unblemished by the threat of war are newly married Corporal Klinger (Jamie Farr), newly divorced Major Margaret Houlihan (Loretta Swit), and the hearing-impaired Father Mulcahy (William Christopher). The central mystery of the episode concerns the nature of Captain B. J. Hunnicutt's "special" goodbye to his roommate and best friend Hawkeye. Originally telecast February 28, 1983, the 2 1/2 hour Goodbye, Farewell and Amen was the most widely watched TV program of all time. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M*A*S*H: Hey, Look Me Over In the opening episode of M*A*S*H's 11th and final season, Margaret (Loretta Swit) drives the nurses of the 4077th mercilessly while her own superior officer, the notoriously severe Colonel Buckholtz (Peggy Seury), conducts an inspection. In the process, Margaret learns to fully appreciate the women in her command. So does Hawkeye (Alan Alda), as he witnesses an act of effortless efficiency and unexpected compassion performed by the hitherto taken-for-granted Nurse Kellye (Kellye Nakahara). This episode was directed by veteran actress Susan Oliver. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M*A*S*H: Trick or Treatment Everyone at the 4077th is celebrating Halloween with a lavish costume party at Rosie's bar--everyone but Charles (David Ogden Stiers), who is not only still on duty, but also hates and despises the so-called holiday. Before the inevitable crisis in which the colorfully garbed staffers pack the O.R., a round-robin session of ghost stories has spines a-shivering (even Charles'); Father Mulcahy must contend with a real-life horror; and an anoxeric patient (Richard Lineback) invokes the "ghosts" which haunt his conscience. Watch for comedian Andrew Dice Clay in a small role. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M*A*S*H: Foreign Affairs Army PR officer Major Reddish (Jeffrey Tambor) unsubtly puts the screws on the doctors of the 4077th. A North Korean pilot has been brought to the hospital, and Reddish is determined that the enemy soldier defect as a morale-boosting gimmick. Meanwhile, Charles is shocked to discover that his latest amour, French nurse Martine (Melinda Mullins), is the proverbial Woman With a History. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M*A*S*H: The Joker is Wild Tired of having his lackluster practical jokes compared to the legendary japes concocted by his predecessor Trapper John, B.J. (Mike Farrell) announces that he will pull a series of surprise gags on everyone in camp over a 24-hour period--and if he doesn't succeed in this undertaking, he will perform a striptease in the mess tent. As the days pass, everyone falls victim to B.J.'s comic assault. Only Hawkeye (Alan Alda) has thus far been spared--but could Beej be saving the best joke till last? Don't reveal the trick ending of this one, or B.J. may be coming after you next. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M*A*S*H: Who Knew? A nurse that Hawkeye (Alan Alda) once dated casually has died. Inasmuch as he is the only person at the 4077th who knew anything about the decedent, Hawk is called upon to deliver her eulogy. As he investigates the last few days of the departed nurse, Hawk is surprised to discover that she was far more emotionally involved with him than she ever let on. And on a somewhat lighter note, Klinger (Jamie Farr) tries to finagle Charles (David Ogden Stiers) into investing in another get-rich-quick scheme. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M*A*S*H: Bombshells Charles (David Ogden Stiers) and Hawkeye (Alan Alda) are out to prove the old adage that one can never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the average person. To that end, the two doctors spread a rumor that Hollywood sex symbol Marilyn Monroe will soon be paying a visit to the 4077th. The only person left unexcited by this "news" is B.J. (Mike Farrell), who is conducting a desperate search for a wounded soldier that he was forced to leave in the battlefield--and who was indirectly responsible for B.J. earning a Purple Heart. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M*A*S*H: Settling Debts Hawkeye (Alan Alda) receives a letter from Mildred Potter, the wife of the 4077's commanding officer Col. Potter (Harry Morgan). Sworn to secrecy, Hawk refuses to divulge the contents of the letter to Potter, despite intense pressure on the part of the curious Colonel. The next assignment on Hawkeye's agenda is to organize a surprise party for Potter--and we aren't about to tell anyone the reason, either. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M*A*S*H: The Moon is Not Blue With temperatures rising and supply shortages abounding, the last thing the 4077th needs is an official prohibition on alcoholic beverages. As thirsty as the next man, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) are B.J. (Mike Farrell) nonetheless determined to keep up the camp's morale. This leads to their planning a special screening of Otto Preminger's once-notorious movie The Moon is Blue (Imagine somebody saying the word "virgin" on the big screen! Disgraceful!) ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M*A*S*H: Run For the Money It's the 4077th MASH unit vs. the 8063rd in a big footrace. To improve their respective odds, both camps have arranged for trained Olympic runners to compete. But when the 4077th's star runner fails to show up, it is up to a home-grown athlete--namely, Father Mulcahy (William Christopher)--to defeat the 8063rd's Earl "Jackrabbit" LeMasters (Mark Anderson). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
