M*A*S*H: Season 06
Part of Series:
M*A*S*H [TV Series]
Remembered both for being a show that lasted nearly four times as long as the war it was about as well as one of the few cases in which a critically acclaimed film was successfully adapted into a critically acclaimed television series, the military comedy drama M*A*S*H ran for 11 seasons, ending with one of the most watched events in the history of the medium. Featuring an ensemble cast that included Alan Alda, Loretta Swit, Harry Morgan, and Jamie Farr and based on the Robert Altman film of the same name, the show followed the often hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking day-to-day lives of a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital staff during the Korean War. At the end of its run, after winning a slew of Emmy awards along with adulation from both critics and viewers, M*A*S*H concluded with "Goodbye, Farewell & Amen," a two-and-a-half hour series finale that became the single most watched episode of any television series ever. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Includes Seasons:
M*A*S*H: Season 06
Season six of M*A*S*H was noteworthy for yet another defection from its regular-cast ranks. Long dissatisfied with the artistic limitations of the role of obnoxious Major Frank Burns, actor Larry Linville followed the lead of his former M*A*S*H colleagues Wayne Rogers and Maclean Stevenson by leaving the series to pursue new projects. It was explained in the sixth season opener that Frank Burns had gone AWOL in reaction to marriage of his longtime paramour Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit) to the dashing (but seldom-seen) Lt. Col. Donald Penobscott, and had been transferred to a stateside hospital. The series' producers were anxious to replace Frank Burns with a character who would remain an antagonist to the nominal "heroes," irreverent Army surgeons Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and B.J. (Mike Farrell). At the same time, it was acknowledged that the series' writers had painted themselves into a creative corner by depicting Burns as stupid and incompetent. His replacement would have to be an eminently qualified and undeniably brilliant surgeon, while at the same time boasting a prickly personality that would drive Hawk and BJ up a wall--and vice versa. Thus was born the character of Major Charles Emerson Winchester II (played by David Ogden Stiers), an aristocratic Boston Brahmin of vast knowledge and expertise, whose surgical skill approached genius, and whose arrogance and disdain for his colleagues would provide an amusing contrast to the casual, carefree slovenliness of the 4077th. Also avoiding the series' previous scripting boondoggle of making Frank Burns thoroughly unlovable, it was established early on that Charles Winchester had his compassionate, humane and even warm moments, despite his haughty, overbearing demeanor. Still in its winning Tuesday-night timeslot, M*A*S*H continued to rank highly in the ratings, though it would slip from fourth to eighth place during its sixth season. Also, this would be the first year since 1973 that M*A*S*H would not win at least one Emmy award, though it was honored with eight nominations. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Includes Episodes:
M*A*S*H: Fade Out, Fade In, Part 1
M*A*S*H inaugurates its sixth season minus the irascible Maj. Frank Burns, who, it is explained, is taking R&R in Seoul to get over the marriage between his longtime sweetie Margaret Houlihan (Loretta Swit). Although Frank is never seen in this episode (actor Larry Linville had left the series for good), the 4077th continually receives reports of his erratic behavior, culminating in a desertion and arrest. Meanwhile, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and B.J. (Mike Farrell) are having their own troubles adjusting to Frank's temporary replacement: Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester II (David Ogden Stiers), a brilliant and erudite surgeon--and an insufferable Back Bay Bostonian snob. Originally telecast as a 60-minute "special," "Fade Out, Fade In has since been reedited as two half-hour episodes for syndication. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
M*A*S*H: Fade Out, Fade In, Part 2
In the conclusion of M*A*S*H's sixth-season opener, Margaret Houlihan (Loretta Swit) is already having problems with her marriage to Donald Penobscot, Major Frank Burns has gone AWOL, and Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and B.J. (Mike Farrell) have had a bellyful of Frank's brilliant but insufferably arrogant replacement, the aristocratic Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester II (David Ogden Stiers). Likewise discomfited is Winchester, especially when his temporary assignment to the 4077th threatens to become permanent. Originally telecast as a 60-minute "special", "Fade Out, Fade In has since been reedited as two half-hour episodes for syndication. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
M*A*S*H: Fallen Idol
Taking the advice of his idol Hawkeye (Alan Alda), Radar (Gary Burghoff) heads off for a weekend of whoopee at the Pink Pagoda in Seoul. When Radar is wounded en route, Hawkeye is consumed by guilt, so much so that he is unable to do his job to the best of his abilities. The disappointed Radar reprimands Hawkeye for his behavior, thereby sparking a war of words that seriously threatens the future relationship of these longtime friends. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
M*A*S*H: Last Laugh
This episode begins on a serious note, as B.J. (Mike Farrell) receives word that he is the target of a military investigation. Before long, however, tension has segued into laughter as Hawkeye (Alan Alda) merrily engages in a battle of practical jokes against his old pal Bardonaro (James Cromwell). The question: Which of the two mirthsome combatants will have the titular "Last Laugh"? ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
M*A*S*H: War of Nerves
Psychiatrist Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus) makes a return visit to the 4077th--at the personal request of Col. Potter (Harry Morgan). It seems that the entire camp is at each other's throats, thanks to the nervous tension built up over a period of several weeks. Ultimately, the doctors and nurses heal their emotional wounds with a cathartic bonfire, while Sidney tries to resolve a personal crisis involving a wounded--and very vindictive--G.I. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
M*A*S*H: The Winchester Tapes
Only the aristocratic Charles Winchester (David Ogden Stiers) would disdain pen and paper to write a letter home to his parents, choosing instead to tape-record his message. Hoping that his influential family will pull strings to get him transferred, Charles bitterly describes the 4077th as a "cesspool", prompting retaliatory action from Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and B.J. (Mike Farrell). Hawkeye in particular needs to let off some steam: He has spent several fruitless days trying to arrange a romantic rendezvous in Seoul. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
M*A*S*H: The Light That Failed
Suffering a shortage of light bulbs, the 4077th sends out a requistion--an ends up with a surplus of ice cream churns and salt tablets. Elsewhere, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) is driven to distraction when he finds that the last page in a mystery novel is missing. Before long, everyone in camp has been caught up in Hawkeye's agony, prompting B.J. (Mike Farrell) to place an extremely long long-distance call to the novel's author. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
M*A*S*H: In Love and War
Against not only his better judgment but also that of Col. Potter (Harry Morgan), Hawkeye (Alan Alda) falls in love. The object of his affection is an artistocratic Korean woman who is caring for her mother and children all by herself. The role of Kyung Soon is played by Kieu Chinh, who was one of South Vietnam's top actresses and TV personalities before the fall of Saigon in 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
M*A*S*H: Change Day
Charles (David Ogden Stiers) hopes to profit from inside information that the Army intends to change the color of its scrip (the paper used in lieu of money during wartime). Purchasing the old blue scrip from the local Korean villagers at bargain-basement prices, Charles intends to turn it in for the new red scrip at full value. This clever scheme is neatly foiled by Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and B.J. (Mike Farrell). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
M*A*S*H: Images
Radar (Gary Burghoff) becomes convinced that he will attract women if he gets a tattoo. The rest of the camp forms a protective circle around Radar, hoping to prevent him from defiling his innocent young epidermis. But Radar is determined, and soon he is sporting a beauty of a skin decoration--but things aren't quite what they appear to be. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
