24 [TV Series]
Employing split screens and kinetic pacing, the real-time action thriller-drama 24 became a fast cult hit when it premiered on FOX in late 2001. Each one-hour episode covers an hour in a single day that unfolds over the course of a season. Kiefer Sutherland stars as über-hero Jack Bauer, a daring and seemingly indestructible agent for the fictitious U.S.-intelligence body the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). Throughout the series, Bauer has stopped an assassination attempt, thwarted a nuclear attack, been widowed, decapitated a witness, died, and become addicted to narcotics while undercover with a drug cartel. Among the other characters are President David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), who was candidate Palmer throughout the first season, later had the Presidency swiped from under him, and was the victim of a bio-attack at the end of the second season; Kim Bauer (Elisha Cuthbert), Jack's trouble-prone, damsel-in-distress daughter; and Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard), a fellow-CIA agent with whom Jack has both butted heads and allied. Noted for its unflinching ability to kill off major players for the sake of the show, an assortment of other characters have come and gone throughout the show's history. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), an anti-terrorism agent based in Los Angeles, has recently returned home after a separation from his wife, Teri (Leslie Hope), and his daughter, Kimberly (Elisha Cuthbert), who seems to blame Teri for the split. Jack and Teri learn that Kimberly has snuck out of the house, but before they can deal with the situation, Jack is called away to work. He has a close relationship with one of his underlings, Nina Myers (Sarah Clarke), and another, Tony (Carlos Bernard), suspects them of having an affair. Jack's boss, Richard Walsh (Michael O'Neill), tells him about a plot to assassinate a presidential candidate, David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert). Walsh also tells him that they suspect that someone in his unit is a mole. Jack gets into a conflict with George Mason (Xander Berkeley), another agent who won't tell him where they got the information about the assassination plot. Palmer gets a call from a reporter who makes a disturbing allegation, but he won't tell his wife, Sherry (Penny Johnson), what the reporter said. Kimberly and her friend, Janet (Jacqui Maxwell), meet up with two older guys, Rick (Daniel Bess) and Dan (Matthew Carey). She hits it off with Dan, but when she realizes that Teri's been trying to reach her, she decides to go home. Rick and Dan offer her a ride home, but they don't follow her directions. Martin Belkin (Rudolph Martin) is flying into L.A. to photograph Palmer. He strikes up a conversation with Mandy (Mia Kirshner), the attractive woman sitting next to him on the plane. As the jet comes in for a landing, Mandy reveals herself to be a part of the terrorist plot. The premiere episode of 24 was directed by Stephen Hopkins (Lost in Space). ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Tony (Carlos Bernard) wants to know what happened between Mason and Jack (Kiefer Sutherland). Nina (Sarah Clarke) comes up with a cover story. Mandy (Mia Kirshner) touches down, and hides the ID she took from the photographer on the plane. Teri (Leslie Hope) and Janet's (Jacqui Maxwell) dad, Alan York (Richard Burgi), get to the furniture store, but the kids are long gone. Walsh (Michael O'Neill) meets a frightened agent, who gives him a card key encoded with classified information about Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), which he says was created by the mole in CTU. Before Walsh can act on the information, the agent is killed, and he finds himself pinned down by unseen gunmen. He calls Jack for help. Mandy meets with Ira Gaines (Michael Massee) and he pays her for the ID, which her partner is bringing. At Gaines' hideout, Mandy sees Jonathan (Rudolph Martin), who's been surgically altered to look just like the photographer. Jack reaches Walsh, and helps him kill two of the gunmen. Jack cuts the thumb off of one corpse, for identification purposes. Bridgit (Kim Murphy), Mandy's partner, shows up at the hideout, but won't give up the ID until Gaines doubles their money. Secret service agents show up at Palmer's hotel room and tell Sherry (Penny Johnson) about the threat against his life, but the senator has taken off on his own. Walsh is killed after giving Jack the key card. Jack gets away, and transmits info on the card to Jamey (Karina Arroyave), who tells him that the card came from Nina's computer. Rick (Daniel Bess) and Dan (Matthew Carey) order Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) to call her mother and say she's okay. Dan smashes Janet's arm with a tire iron when Kim refuses. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Mandy (Mia Kirshner) apologizes to Ira (Michael Massee) for Bridgit's (Kim Murphy) demands. Ira calls Rick (Daniel Bess) and Dan (Matthew Carey) for an update on Kim. Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) meets with Carl (Zach Grenier), some kind of PR guy, and tells him there's a story out that the senator's son Keith (Vicellous Reon Shannon), killed the man who raped his daughter. Carl promises to take care of it. Jack tells Jamey (Karina Arroyave) about Walsh's allegations, and has her confirm that the key card came from Nina's (Sarah Clarke) computer, while he keeps Nina occupied by asking about her relationship with Tony (Carlos Bernard). Once the origin of the card is confirmed, Jack accosts Nina, demanding to know who she's working for. Nina pleads her innocence. Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) and Janet (Jacqui Maxwell) manage to temporarily escape from Rick (Daniel Bess) and Dan (Matthew Carey). With the boys hot on their trail, they get unexpected help from Larry (Keram Malicki-Sanchez), a street hustler. They manage to get their hands on a cell phone, and Kim puts in an urgent call to her mother. But as the girls race off, Janet gets hit by a car, and Kim is caught. After Ira transfers another million dollars into their account, Bridgit gives up the ID card, and pays dearly for her greed. Jack learns that the weekend the key card was created on Nina's computer, she was away with him. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Jack manages to get out of the building. Tony (Carlos Bernard) admits to Nina that he called Mason in. Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) returns to his hotel room, and finds out about the assassination threat. Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) pleads with Rick (Daniel Bess) and Dan (Matthew Carey) to go back for Janet (Jacqui Maxwell), whom they've left for dead. Dan decides they have to go back...to finish Janet off. Just as Dan is about to shoot Janet, an ambulance arrives, and he's forced to leave. Palmer finds out the source for the story about Keith (Vicellous Shannon) was Keith's old therapist, and he finally tells Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald) what's going on. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) follows the police as they take Penticoff (John Hawkes) into custody. Jack tells Mason that Penticoff is involved in an attempt on Palmer's (Dennis Haysbert) life, but he doesn't mention anything about Kimberly. Penticoff demands to speak to Jack, telling him that Kimberly will die if Jack doesn't help him escape so he can answer Gaines' phone call. Palmer meets with reporter Maureen Kingsley (Devika Parikh) and she tells him her very convincing sources for the story about Palmer's son, Keith (Vicellous Shannon). Palmer later confronts Keith and asks him what he did after Nicole (Megalyn Echikunwoke) was raped. Keith refuses to answer. Jack helps Penticoff escape, and Penticoff gets the call from Gaines, who tells him to dispose of a body located in the trunk of a nearby car. Hearing about the body, Jack fears the worst. Keith angrily accuses Palmer of always putting his career before his family. Nicole is also upset, but agrees to go to the breakfast. Gaines (Michael Massee) orders Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) to replace the key card that Milo is decoding. When Jack gets to the office, he pretends everything is going well. Nina tells him that the dead man in the trunk was Alan York, and Jack struggles to remain composed. Knowing that Gaines can hear everything he says, he tries to write a note to Nina, only to learn that Gaines can also see him through CTU's security cameras. Gaines calls Kevin (Richard Burgi) and warns him that Teri (Leslie Hope) knows he's not York. Kevin gets the message too late, giving Teri a chance to knock him out and tie him to a tree before frantically trying to reach Jack. Rick (Daniel Bess) is worried when Gaines orders him to stay on the compound, so he agrees to help Kimberly (Elisha Cuthbert) try to escape. Jack manages to switch the disc on Milo, but Milo and Nina soon realize what's happened, and Nina confronts Jack, who pulls a gun on her, and forces her to leave CTU with him. Tony (Carlos Bernard) sees them leaving, and decides to look at the security tape. Teri calls the office and reaches Jamey (Karina Arroyave), who promises to send someone from CTU to get her. Jonathan (Rudolph Martin), disguised as Martin, clears security and gets into the event. Gaines (Michael Massee) puts Teri (Leslie Hope) on the phone briefly to encourage Jack's (Kiefer Sutherland) continued cooperation. Jack follows Gaines' orders, picking up a briefcase and taking it to the power station where Palmer is speaking. Jamey (Karina Arroyave) gets word from Gaines that Nina (Sarah Clarke) is dead, and to make up a story to explain her absence. Nina calls Tony (Carlos Bernard) and tells him not to let anyone know that she's alive, and to put Jamey on the phone. He's about to, when Jamey tells him she just spoke to Nina, arousing his suspicions. Alerted to possible surveillance by Nina, he sends a car to pick her up. Jack gets through security at the power station, and runs into an old friend, Jessica Abrams (Jackie Debatin), who works for Palmer, but he's foiled in his efforts to pass her a note. Gaines orders him to a secluded room, where Jonathan has him assemble the gun inside the briefcase. Tony insists on calling the secret service to warn them that Jack's been compromised. They, in turn, ask Palmer to leave immediately, but he insists on making his speech first. Nina and Tony manage to capture Jamey without being seen by the security cameras at CTU. Teri hears one of Gaines' men telling Rick (Daniel Bess) that she and Kimberly (Elisha Cuthbert) won't be around for long, and she fears the worst. Jonathan takes aim at Palmer. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

He tells the secret service head, Simes (Michael Bryan French). Jamey (Karina Arroyave) tells Nina (Sarah Clarke) and Tony (Carlos Bernard) that she's working for Gaines (Michael Massee). They have her call Gaines and tell him that she's removing the tap on CTU's surveillance, which she does. Once again able to move freely, Nina has Milo (Eric Balfour) take over Jamey's work. Jack tells Simes that the people trying to kill Palmer are holding his wife and daughter hostage. Simes says he can't help Jack, and prepares to turn him over to the FBI. Jack manages to grab a gun and escape. He forces a woman, Lauren (Kathleen Wilhoite), at gunpoint to drive him away. Jamey tries to explain her actions to Tony, who calls her a traitor. She refuses to cooperate further until they give her immunity. Jack, now with a hostage, gets to a phone and calls Nina, who tells him that Jamey was the mole. He talks to Jamey, promising to get her out of trouble if she'll help them find Gaines. She refuses, so Jack tells Nina to send a car for him, and to bring in Jamey's son. Mike (Jude Ciccolella) tells Palmer about Jack. The name Jack Bauer sounds familiar. Eli (Silas Weir Mitchell), one of Gaines' goons, tries to rape Kimberly (Elisha Cuthbert), but Teri (Leslie Hope) offers herself instead. She somehow manages to lift his cell phone while he does his business. Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald) gets the reporter to hold off on the story about Keith (Vicellous Shannon). Teri calls again, but has to hide the cell phone when Eli (Silas Weir Mitchell) comes back looking for it. Teri and Kimberly (Elisha Cuthbert) play dumb. Rick (Daniel Bess) sees the phone, but doesn't tell Eli. Milo (Eric Balfour) begins tracing the call. Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) tells Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald) that he still plans to go public with the story. Tony (Carlos Bernard) finds an encrypted e-mail that Jamey sent from her computer that morning with a man's name, "Ted Cofell," as the subject. Milo starts decoding it. The cops have an APB out on Jack. They pull him over, but he gets away again. Nina patches him through to Teri and Kim and he promises he'll save them. They hide the phone again as Eli returns, still looking for it. Jack listens in helplessly as he roughly interrogates them. Then the phone, low on battery power, starts beeping. Eli finds it, picks it up, and hears Jack issue a death threat. He hangs up before they can finish the trace. Rick tries to convince Eli not to tell Gaines (Michael Massee) about the incident. Nina gives Jack an address for Cofell (Currie Graham), an investment banker, and Jack heads there. Andre Drazen (Zeljko Ivanek) calls Gaines to complain that Palmer is still alive. He threatens to take back his money, and worse. Sherry calls Carl (Zach Grenier), who tells her he's "taken care of" the evidence against Keith. Milo decodes the e-mail.
