The X-Files: Season 02
Part of Series:
The X-Files [TV Series]
From its Fox Network debut on September 10, 1993, to its finale on May 19, 2002, the weekly 60-minute sci-fi drama The X-Files endeavored to prove that "the truth is out there." The series' title refers to those FBI files dealing with cases of paranormal and other otherwise unexplainable phenomena -- UFO sightings, alien abductions, genetic experimentation, possessions, telekinesis, and the like. Investigating the X-Files are agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). Notorious within FBI circles as a maverick and iconoclast, the Oxford-educated Mulder made it his personal mission in life to prove that there were more things in Heaven and on Earth than were dreamt of in our philosophy. For him, it was very personal: his own sister had been abducted by extraterrestrials some 20 years earlier. His more skeptical partner, medical doctor Scully, was assigned to curb Mulder's more "fanciful" theories and to seek logical explanations to the phenomena at hand. (Ironically, in real life, actor David Duchovny doubted the existence of space aliens, while Gillian Anderson confessed to being a "true believer.") As the series progressed, Scully became more convinced that there were indeed paranormal forces beyond her ken; conversely, Mulder began to concede that Scully could be right once in a while, and tried to prove that humans, rather than aliens, were responsible for selected phenomena. Each successive season of The X-Files ended with a cliffhanger, ranging from the murder of Mulder's information source "Deep Throat" (Jerry Hardin) to the birth of a mutant child who may or may not have belonged to one of the agents. No matter what happened, the physical evidence proving (or disproving) alien intervention invariably disappeared, and it was abundantly clear that there were those within the government who didn't want the truth to come out. Among the most obstreperous of Mulder and Scully's antagonists was a ubiquitous, obnoxious stranger (William B. Davis), known variously as "Cancer Man" and "Cigarette Smoking Man," and finally identified as one C.G.B. Spender. Other regulars and semi-regulars over the years have included Mitch Pileggi as Mulder and Scully's boss, Assistant FBI Director Walter Skinner; Steven Williams as Mr. X, another enigmatic information source; Nicholas Lea as Agent Alex Krycek; Mimi Rogers as Agent Diana Fowley; Chris Owens as Agent Jeffrey Spender; and Tom Braidwood as Melvin Frohike, a member of a government "conspiracy watchdog" group known as The Lone Gunman. One of the most popular series ever to emanate from Fox, The X-Files was also one of the longest-lasting science fiction series of all time, surpassed in longevity only by the endless Star Trek saga. In 1998, the series spawned a successful theatrical feature, also titled The X-Files, which tied up several loose plot ends from the series while establishing a whole new set of mysterious complications. The X-Files was created and executive-produced by Chris Carter. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Includes Seasons:
The X-Files: Season 02
With Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) firmly established as the believer and the skeptic, respectively, the second season of The X-Files picks up where the first left off -- with the X-Files closed and both agents in FBI-style exile, forced to work on tedious, non-paranormal assignments. Of course, this doesn't last long; some of the series' most pertinent characters are introduced, such as the seemingly omnipresent Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis), a shadowy informant known only as X, and the double-timing Agent Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea). The second season also marks the true launch of the complex X-Files mythology, and is home to one of the milestones of the series itself, namely, Agent Scully's own abduction and its far-reaching consequences, including the infamous "Purity Control." Mulder, meanwhile, continues to search for answers regarding his sister's abduction and finds several disturbing clues through visits to his father. Complicating issues further is the existence of a seemingly indestructible -- and quite possibly not of this world -- bounty hunter. Luckily, there are also plenty of monster-of-the-week episodes to turn to when the conspiracy gets too deep. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Includes Episodes:
The X-Files: Little Green Men
Season two of The X-Files opened September 16, 1994, on a somber note, as Mulder and Scully were forced to deal with the disbandment of the X-Files Unit. Assigned to mundane FBI investigations, the two agents are bored out of their minds. But things begin to pick up when, tipped off by Senator Richard Matheson (Raymond J. Barry), Mulder heads to Puerto Rico to investigate possible extraterrestrial activity at an abandoned radio telescope site. Mitch Pileggi makes his first appearance as FBI Assistant Director Skinner. Written by Glen Morgan and James Wong, "Little Green Men" was the title of the series' second-season opener. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The X-Files: The Host
"The Host" gets under way when a corpse is found in a Newark, NJ, sewer. Not long afterward, a sanitation worker is attacked. Assigned to investigate the fact that both victims bore the same strange mark on their necks, Mulder and Scully uncover evidence that the culprit is a vicious parasitic organism in human form. Written by X-Files creator Chris Carter, "The Host" was originally telecast on September 23, 1994. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The X-Files: Blood
Mulder is summoned to a small suburban community in Pennsylvania, where an inexplicable murder spree has occurred. The killers are all local residents, otherwise peaceful individuals who have been whipped into a frenzy by subliminal electronic messages. Joined in his investigations by Scully, Mulder traces the cause of the murders to a rare chemical agent that affects only those who are plagued by phobias -- a description that could apply to nearly one-quarter of the town's population. First telecast September 30, 1994, "Blood" was written by Glen Morgan and James Wong. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The X-Files: Sleepless
Investigating the murder of a specialist in sleep disorders, Mulder travels to Connecticut in the company of his new temporary partner, Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea). Linking up with Scully, Mulder and Krycek determine that the dead specialist, as well as another recent murder victim, died of causes other than those that the evidence suggests. The key to the mystery would seem to be a Vietnam veteran who has the ability to transfer his consciousness to the minds of others. Written by Howard Gordon, "Sleepless" originally aired October 7, 1994. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The X-Files: Duane Barry
Part one of a two-part X-Files adventure, "Duane Barry" was originally telecast October 14, 1994. The title character, played by Steve Railsback, is a mentally disturbed former FBI agent who has taken several people hostage. Mulder is assigned to negotiate with Barry when the latter claims that he himself was kidnapped by aliens. Though the hostage crisis passes, it is clear that trouble lies ahead for Mulder's erstwhile partner Scully. "Duane Barry" was written by Chris Carter. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The X-Files: Ascension
First telecast on October 21, 1994, "Ascension" was the conclusion of a two-part X-Files drama that began with the previous week's "Duane Barry." Steve Railsback guest stars as former FBI agent Duane Barry, who has become unhinged after an apparent alien abduction. Escaping from federal custody, Barry kidnaps Scully and forces her to take him to the sight where he allegedly experienced his close encounter -- as Mulder, who believes Barry but worries that the man will turn violent again, rushes to the rescue. "Ascension" was written by Paul Brown. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The X-Files: 3
Wasting no time once the X-Files are opened again, Mulder immediately tackles the case of a serial killer. When captured, the killer claims that he is one of three vampires who have roamed the earth for centuries. This time, surprisingly, it is Mulder who is skeptical -- until his prisoner dies just as the sun rises. Meanwhile, agent Scully, previously abducted by former FBI agent Duane Barry, remains missing (a fact attributable to the real-life pregnancy of X-Files co-star Gillian Anderson). Written by Glen Morgan and James Wong, "3" was originally telecast November 4, 1994. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The X-Files: One Breath
After spending several weeks searching for his missing partner, Scully, Mulder tracks her down at a Washington, D.C., hospital. He learns that she is comatose and on life support -- but when he tries to find out why, he is told to mind his own business and go home. Mulder tries to solve the mystery and save his partner's life with the help of Scully's sister, Melissa (Melinda McGraw), and a member of The Lone Gunman. Scripted by Glen Morgan and James Wong to accommodate Gillian Anderson's maternity leave from The X-Files, "One Breath" first aired November 11, 1994. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The X-Files: Firewalker
After missing several X-Files episodes due to her pregnancy, Gillian Anderson returned to her familiar role of Agent Scully in the November 18, 1994, episode "Firewalker." Re-teamed with agent Mulder, Scully investigates the death of a scientist who was researching volcanic activity in Oregon. At first, it seems that the murderer is Dr. Daniel Trepkos (Bradley Whitford), head of the research team. But as the evidence mounts up, it becomes obvious that the cause of the tragedy is a silicon-based parasite, capable of assuming human form. "Firewalker" was written by Howard Gordon. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The X-Files: Red Museum
Again traveling to Wisconsin, Mulder and Scully investigate the apparent abduction of a 16-year-old boy. Sheriff Mazeroski (Steve Eastin) suspects that the boy was kidnapped -- and brainwashed -- by a local vegetarian cult, the Red Museum. Things take an even more sinister turn when the sheriff's own son is abducted -- and later turns up murdered, the victim of a mysterious alien DNA injected into his veins. Written by X-Files creator Chris Carter, "Red Museum" was first broadcast on December 9, 1994. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
