I Spy: Season 03
Part of Series:
I Spy [TV Series]
Robert Culp and Bill Cosby starred in the TV espionage series I Spy as tennis star Kelly Robinson and his trainer, Alexander Scott. Robinson and Scott, however, were also international spies, and used Robinson's globetrotting from one tournament to the next as a cover for their high-risk assignments. Filmed on location around the world, I Spy gave Bill Cosby his first weekly TV exposure and earned a number of Emmy and Golden Globe awards in its three-year run. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

I Spy: Season 03
Although the episode plotlines in the third season of I Spy are as adult and cynical as ever, the venerable espionage series has for the most part become a laugh-fest, thanks to the whimsical verbal improvisations of stars Robert Culp and Bill Cosby. Many is the time during season three that all action stops dead in its tracks to allow the two protagonist to exchange silly puns and sly inside jokes -- to the extent that many of the series' fans began yearning for "tragic relief" from all the comedy! This year, American secret agents Kelly Robinson (Culp) and Alexander Scott (Cosby) spend most of their time on missions in the United States, though the series still boasts a generous supply of location footage filmed in such exotic stopovers as Greece and Mexico. Among the season's guest stars are Dorothy Lamour in "The Honorable Assassins," Gene Hackman in "Happy Birthday...Everybody," and France Nuyen (then married to star Robert Culp) in "An American Empress." And, though I Spy received its cancellation notice halfway through the season, the series remained on the air long enough to earn co-star Bill Cosby his third Emmy award in a row. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Includes Episodes:
I Spy: Philotimo
John Megna, a child actor best known for his work in To Kill a Mockingbird, appears in the I Spy episode "Philotimo." Megna is cast as Stefan, a Bulgarian musical prodigy who begs agents Kelly and Scotty to help him defect. The moment he has arrived on "our" side of the Iron Curtain, Stefan accuses the two agents of kidnapping him! Our heroes' problems are compounded when the boy is kidnapped for real. Also appearing is Harold J. Stone in the recurring role of Greek agent Zarkas. First telecast on October 9, 1967, "Philotimo" was written by Ernest Frankel. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
I Spy: The Honorable Assassins
Dorothy Lamour guest-stars as Halima, a stubborn Arab woman who prevails upon agents Kelly and Scott to help her father Quazzani (Edgar Stehli) rightfully reclaim a fortune in Marakkech. What Halima fails to tell our heroes is that Quazzani has been targetted for extinction by soft-spoken assassin Roop (Nehemiah Persoff). Perhaps inspired by the presence of Lamour in the cast, "The Honorable Assassins" bears all the earmarks of an old "Road" picture, with Kelly and Scotty subtly assuming the characterizations normally assigned to Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Written by Les and Tina Pine, the episode originally aired on October 16, 1967. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
I Spy: Now You See Her, Now You Don't
Kelly Robinson feels responsible when a secret agent he personally recruited is killed while searching for missing British mathematics expert Kate Stanford (Barbara Mullen). Kelly is given the opportunity to make amends-at least in his own mind-when he and his partner Scotty take over the dead agent's assignment, which proves to be a very tricky one. Written by Jerry Ludwig, this episode was filmed on location on the Greek island of Mykonos. "Now You See Her, Now You Don't" was first telecast on October 23, 1967. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
I Spy: Red Sash of Courage
Once again dispatched to the Greek-Yugoslav border, Kelly and Scotty try to locate an enemy spy station which is festooned with saboteurs. The agents are faced with danger of a different sort when Kelly is false accused of "despoiling" Stephanie (Louise Sorel), the daughter of a village mayor. In fact, it looks as if Kelly's bachelorhood will soon be dissolved in a traditional shotgun wedding! First broadcast on October 30, 1967, "Red Sash of Courage" was written by Oliver Crawford. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
