Ueki is a middle-school boy with a very impressive power: he can transform garbage into trees. The reason behind this strange ability is the fact that he has been selected by a god as a fighter to represent him in the battle for succession. Only junior-high-age boys are chosen for this tournament and given the gift of a transformation power, and Ueki is one of the chosen few. Now he must use his magic to fight other representative boys so that his god might be the one that reigns. If he succeeds, he will be given whatever power he chooses as a reward.
